Scottish Championship Event 4

The fourth and final Championship event took place in Glasgow on Sunday 20 March. Only 11 players took part and although Steve Bennett dropped points for the first time in the four events, he still came top of the table. In fact Tom Burns led Bennett 4-1 with only 6 minutes remaining but a remarkable come-back saw Bennett draw 4-4. Gareth Christie missed out on the event and so fell back to 5th spot. Tom Burns had missed Event 3 and so had to settle for 7th. Top GTSA player was Malcolm Lees who finished 2nd whilst Baver Bari was 4th. Final placings will determine who can take part in the World Cup in Rome in September.

National Championship Event 3

DSC03359.JPG

GTSA’s Malcolm Lees has become the Scottish National Champion for season 2019/20. He fought off the challenges of Tom Burns and Steve Bennett to secure the title. The third and final championship event took place in Letham on Sunday 19 January.

IMG_20200119_140240.jpg

After two events Tom Burns led Malcolm Lees on goal difference but after three rounds of play in the third event Lees was now ahead, again on goal difference. As they started the final games Steve Bennett was also in a position to take the title. Bennett lined up against Lees, Burns against Andy Beskaby. To win Bennett needed to beat Lees and hope that Burns lost to Beskaby. Lees needed to beat Bennett and Burns needed to better Lees’ result. Everyone expected Bennett to defeat Lees, in which case Burns would only need a draw against Beskaby. Burns was definitely the favourite going into the final game.

Burns did get a draw against Beskaby, enough to put him ahead of Bennett. Burns went ahead but was pegged back. It was a close match and a fair result. It wasn’t a surprise when Lees took a first half lead against Bennett. He’d done that before. It’s just that he’d never kept that lead – ever. But today would be different. Bennett peppered the Lees goal with shots but could not make the breakthrough. Lees held on and the championship was his.

Fourteen players took part in the third Scottish Circuit Event of the season. A group stage was followed by knock-out matches to determine a ranking order of players. despite the home venue only six Glasgow players took part. Tom Burns was best placed finishing fourth but four players, Barry Corr, John Halpin, Malcolm Lees and Fraser McKenzie were runners-up in their groups. The competition was a breakthrough for Fraser McKenzie who was happy with his eighth placed finish.

DSC04827.JPG

The final match was a repeat of the last circuit event with Gareth Christie and Steve Bennett fighting it out. Christie was again victorious although this time he had to score an extra-time golden goal to seal the win. Christie now leads the table where only two points separate the top three. With a player’s best three events counting Christie is strong favourite since he will surely better his seventh place in circuit 1.
